Dutch Shepherd
I recommend reading more info on on the Breed (also known as Hollandse herder) here is a Brief Summary. Dutch Shepherds are very popular in their homeland (Netherlands) their not well known outside of their homeland and are registered in a select few countries their cousins are the German and Belgian Shepherds, the Dutch Shepherd was once considered to be a Belgian Shepherd with a brindle coat but later recognized as a separate breed. Their original purpose was Herding, However their high Stamina, agility, as well as prey drive make these dogs some of the best working dogs, their able to do any of the jobs of their Cousins and exile in some areas.
They are Very Loving dogs (lap dog is the best definition), Intelligent and easy to train (consistency is needed,) they will not respond to a harsh hand. They are very loyal to their people. They are Protective and love living inside and being part of the family. For all their good traits they can develop bad traits, these dogs have a high level of energy and need to have a Job and regular exercise if not indulged they will become destructive. You need to train them in obedience and give them regular exercise and curve their chewing habits towards dog toys and spending time with them. They are not a breed for everyone and you need to do research before getting one. They make excellent agility prospects, as they are very agile and fast. They are very animated in everything they do. A house with a large yard (enclosed if you live close to the highway) is highly recommended, this breed can be very aloof and Vocal towards Strangers and its wise to socialize them at a young age.
My experiences in owning this amazing breed has been very rewarding. I never have to fear being harmed with my girls on duty. They take their job seriously in protecting the family. I do have to be careful when people come over, as they do become protective. They will play as long as I keep playing with them. They are happiest doing things with me be it working on their training or playing fetch or go find the ball. Just to give you an idea of how intellegent this breed is. My dogs love to carry a ball around. Dee was drinking out of a huge tub of water, that my dogs like to get in to play in.
She dropped her ball in the water, well the water was quiet dirty, as one of my shepherds had just layed in it to kool off.
Dee ducked her head in the water to retrieve her ball. Well she couldn't find it like that so I observed her putting her leg in the water and feeling around for the ball. When it appeared she had located it by feeling it with her leg, she ducked her head in the water and pulled out the ball. Then took off to bring it to me to throw for her. Her problem solving abilities are very good. Who said that dogs aren't smart!!! They surely weren't refering to the dogs I know.
I could go on and on about them, but if you ever want to talk about the breed or ask questions please contact me.
They can be a handful if you don't train or spend time with them, but If you don't have time for a dog, you shouldn't have one anyway. Any Dog!!!!
